Veteran Story

After serving with the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii, Joseph Krukowski returned to civilian life with dreams of building a future in baseball. But life took a sharp turn, and he spent 31 years in the California Department of Corrections. When he was released, he was dropped at a bus station with only a bike, an EBT card, and a bus pass.

Facing homelessness in Los Angeles, Joseph connected with Village for Vets and case manager Carina.

“Without Carina at the beginning, I don’t know where I’d be,” he said. “She handled everything. She gets five stars from me.”

Carina helped him secure HUD-VASH housing and encouraged him to pursue steady work. After a series of tough jobs, she introduced him to Stephanie, his Village for Vets employment case manager. Stephanie guided him through job applications and digital interviews. With her help, Joseph joined the Metro Room to Work program and landed a job with LA Metro.

“Everyone wants a stable home and a stable job. That’s 90 percent of the battle,” he said. “I’ve been blessed.”

Joseph remains deeply grateful: “Carina and Stephanie were incredible. I want to thank Janet too. She helped toward the end.”
