Homeless Veteran Story - Ben Perdue, Executive Director of Village for Vets

As Giving Season begins, Ben Perdue, our Executive Director and a Navy Veteran, about why this time of year matters for the Veterans we serve.

Ben’s connection to service runs deep. “I was born on a Naval base while my father was serving, so following in his footsteps always felt natural,” he said. As a Boatswain’s Mate, he served across Asia and the Middle East. He also experienced homelessness, including time living on Skid Row. “I would not be where I am today without people who cared enough to help me. Every Veteran we support reminds me of my own journey. I lead with the mindset that every Veteran we help could have been me.”

This lived experience drives his leadership at Village for Vets. In the past year, he is especially proud of launching the Peer Center, the Food Hub, and the new LA County Housing Program. “These accomplishments are the result of the community coming together to fill critical gaps,” he said. “Village for Vets addresses needs that the VA and traditional providers simply cannot. We step in when a Veteran has nowhere else to turn.”

For Ben, Giving Tuesday is a powerful reminder of what community can accomplish. “The holiday season is a time to lift up those who need support the most. Giving Tuesday brings people together around generosity, and that sense of community allows us to serve Veterans effectively.”

He also made clear that donations have a direct impact. “The more our community gives, the more Veterans we can house, feed, and support. Every contribution helps ensure that a Veteran in need has access to safety, stability, and community.”

Ben’s message to supporters is simple. “Thank you for believing in our mission. Your support helps Veterans find dignity, hope, and a path forward. We are honored to do this work alongside you.”
